I'd like to share an article written
by David Uri LeBaron,
pioneer and innovator of live, whole food-based nutrition.
"THIS IS NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S TOMATO! - Part I"
"After more than 30 years of 'hands-on' organic farming
and continuous nutritional research, let me explain why...
this is NOT your grandmother's tomato!
You've heard 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away'...
but not today's apple. Today's apple is not your grandmother's apple.
Neither is a tomato, nor lettuce, or carrot - you name it.
And in many cases, even what's advertised as a 'natural' food
may not really be what you think it is. That's because you're being sold a bill of goods by the big food manufacturers when it comes to conventionally grown fruits, vegetables, and other so-called 'healthy' foods today.
The Truth: Beward of the 'Toxic Buffet'
Why have so many of our food sources been altered? Why are our foods no longer delivering the kind of nutrition they've provided us in the past? And what are the potential risks from these foods?
Here are the startling answers, starting with these facts:
Did you know that over 70 percent of processed foods in U.S. grocery stores contain genetically modified ingredients? And more than half of the corn grown in the U.S. is genetically engineered? This means foods are being altered by scientists in ways our forefathers never imagined. Just consider these shocking examples...
1. Many prematurely picked tomatoes are artificially ripened with hormones.
Take a tomato. The longer it stays on the vine, the higher its sugar level, better its taste, and higher its nutrient content. Just think about how good a home-grown tomato tastes. Yum! But out-of-season produce in the U.S. is often shipped up to 2,500 miles before being sold - so you can't pick a fully ripened tomato and expect to sell it cross country.
This is why many farmers in Florida, California, and Mexico pick tomatoes at 'mature green' state and artificially ripen them with ethylene. Ethylene is a hormone derived from petroleum and natural gas. The problem is, these tomatoes are deprived of optimum nutrient content.
2. Apples are treated with radioactive gamma rays to appear fresher.
Today, some conventionally grown apples are treated with radioactive gamma rays (yes, low levels of radiation) to extend shelf life and make them appear fresher than they really are. [Business News, 6/1/2005]
In fact, irradiation destroys up to 80 percent of an apple's essential vitamins A, B2, B3, B6, C, E, and K, as well as thiamin, folic acid, and even essential fatty acids and amino acids.
3. Crops are 'genetically-modified' (GM) to grow better.
To create more drought-and pest-resistant crops, engineers insert bacteria, viruses, plant or animal cells and even human genes into seeds...but at what risk? [truefoodnetwork.com]
For example, GM crops are designed to withstand herbicides...so farmers growing GM soybeans are using 2-5 times more herbicides than growers of natural varieties. GM crops easily pollinate with related weeds, creating 'super weeds' that are resistant to top-seling herbicides...forcing farmers to use more toxic herbicides.
Shockingly, U.S. food manufacturers are NOT required to put "genetically modified" on any food labels! This leave us in the dark. In fact, according to the International Food Information Council, 62 percent of Americans surveyed said they knew 'a little or nothing at all' about genetic engineering of foods.
But as you'll see in a moment, 'the Feast' gives you REAL whole food-based nutrition from organic and naturally grown fruits, berries, greens, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and sprouts, just as Nature intended - free of the dangers of biotech engineering and genetic modification.
Another reason why today's common fruits and vegetables are nowhere near the quality of your grandmother's is the shockingly poor vitamin and mineral content found in today's conventionally grown produce. Since the late 1950's, the nutritional content of America's conventionally grown fruits and vegetables has declined, often significantly.
Dr. Donald Davis, a biochemist at the University of Texas, noted that the USDA tracked 13 major nutrients in garden crops from 1950 to 1999 and found six with noticeable declines. Of these, a 38 percent drop in riboflavin...a 15 percent drop in iron...and a 20 percent drop in vitamin C stand out.
Nutritionist Alex Jack found even more shocking evidence when he compared USDA food tables from 1963 to those of 2000, as reported in Life Extension [March 2001]. He found the following: 50% less calcium in broccoli and carrots, 88% less iron in watercress, 45% less vitamin C in spinach, 51.5% less potassium in collard greens, and 66% less iron in apples, oranges, and apricots. SHOCKING!
WHY such poor nutritional content in our produce today?"

Weight Loss 4 Carb Addicts Pt 15 - Keys to Good Nutrition & Tips to Eating Healthy Feast on Organic Whole Food

Weight Loss for Carb Addicts Pt 15
There's a lot of us out there,
CARBOHYDRATE ADDICTS, that is,
and losing weight is always a challenge for us.
Here's a secret I'd like to share with you that I used
when I lost my 23+ pounds and no longer fit into my pants.
CARB ADDICT WEIGHT LOSS SECRET:
When you sit down to eat a meal,
divide your plate into thirds.
One third, your favorite third, will of course,
be CARBS! I'm talking starchy carbohydrates like
pasta, brown rice, whole grain bread, potatoes, etc.
Enjoy that one third of your plate
because that's all the starchy carbs you'll get for the meal.
One third will be a protein food
such as a healthy organic natural meat,
organic raw cheese, peanut butter, etc.
One third of your plate will be fresh organic vegetables
such as green beans, corn, broccoli, peas, etc.
Remember, the best way to eat your vegetables is raw.
However, if you feel you need to cook them,
then the best way is to lightly steam them in spring water.
No canned vegetables are allowed (they're dead food).
In addition to the three thirds on your plate,
you also get to eat a fresh salad with each lunch and dinner made from fresh, organic, raw greens and vegetables
with a big squeeze of fresh lemon for your dressing
(avoid salad dressings that are loaded with carbs)
or you can make your own home made dressing
with apple cider vinegar, virgin olive oil, and spring water.
Eating your meal in this way will help balance out the carbs you're eating and keep your blood sugar from spiking. In other words, the veggies, salad, and protein will help to offset the effects of 1/3 of your plate being carbs. In this way you will learn to limit your starchy carbs to just one third of your meal, which in turn will help you to lose weight.
No more sitting down to a huge bowl of pasta or rice
or potatoes and pigging out on carbs. That will (or should I say
"has" made) make you fat.
Carbs are good for your body IN MODERATION!
Carbs are good for your body when properly balanced out
with equal amounts of greens, vegetables, protein, and salad.
Carbs are good for your body when you eat
small portions of the right kinds of healthy whole food carbs
such as brown rice, whole grain breads, organic potatoes, etc.
IF you will learn to apply this secret to your eating habits,
no matter if you're eating at home or at a restaurant,
THEN you will enjoy the benefits of being able to enjoy
at least a small portion of your favorite carbs each meal,
while at the same time losing weight because you're
eating them in the right proportions and amounts.
When I first learned this secret,
I started planning ahead and looking forward to
upcoming meals just to be able to enjoy my favorite carbs.
For example, I planned on 1/3 plate of pasta on Monday,
with the rest of my meal of course,
and 1/3 plate of my favorite Persian rice on Tuesday,
and 1/3 plate of my wife's homemade mashed potatoes on Wed.,
and 1/3 plate of fresh organic whole grain bread on Thurs.
In this way, I was not completely depriving myself of
all of my favorite and beloved carbs.
Instead, I was learning to space them out,
eat them in proportion to vegetables and proteins,
and keep everything in balance.
One final secret to remember:
Eat your whole meal in one hour or less.
Don't let your meal continue on past an hour
because if you do, a second round of insulin
will kick in to your system and spike your blood sugar.
Carb addicts have a way of eating way too many carbs
in one meal, at one sitting,
which tends to kick in too much insulin,
which in turn spikes their blood sugar,
all of which eventually will start to
set them up for some kind of diabetes condition.
My philosophy is this:
YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CARBS, AND EAT YOUR PROTEIN & VEGETABLES TOO! ALONG WITH A GOOD SIZE SALAD.
One final note.
You can have as much salad as you want.
Also, if you're really still hungry after
eating your complete meal and salad,
you can have more carbs at that point,
AS LONG AS you also eat equal size portions of more protein and more vegetables.
In this way, everything is kept in proper proportion
and nutritional balance that protects your health
and your waist line.
Now that you know these secrets,
GO AND PRACTICE THEM!
I learned these secrets from two carb addicts who were both
grossly overweight and learned how to overcome their addiction.
Their book is entitled,
"The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program,"
by Dr. Richard Heller and Dr. Rachael Heller.
I would recommend this book to all carb addicts
who want to learn how to lose weight
and take control of their health and weight
and overcome their carbohydrate addiction.

GTF Chromium & Weight Loss Pt 14 - Keys to Good Nutrition & Tips to Eating Healthy Feast on Organic Whole Food
GTF CHROMIUM Supplement
One of the things that I did when I was changing my diet and losing a lot of weight was to add GTF Chromium to my daily supplements.
Chromium is something that we all need in our diet, but unfortunately,
it is usually greatly lacking given the way people eat today
and given the poor soil that most of our produce is grown in.
CHROMIUM is an essential nutrient that provides
nutritional support for normal, healthy insulin action
and glucose utilization.
The Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) is a biological test
of this ability.
Chromium is an essential mineral that your body needs
but can't produce.
Chromium works with insulin to improve the transportation
of glucose out of the blood and into the cell.
This function improves health in many ways, including:
1. Decreasing blood sugar - Chromium may reduce the amount of sugar
circulating in your blood, thereby decreasing your risk of diabetes
and metabolic syndrome.
2. Decreasing LDL (bad cholesterol)
3. Increasing the good HDL cholesterol
4. Decreasing blood pressure
5. Decreasing the risk of heart disease and stroke
6. Decreasing body fat - Chromium may improve your body's insulin
sensitivity, helping to reduce body fat.
7. Increasing lean body mass
I would personally recommend taking 200 mcg per day.
I only recommend "GTF CHROMIUM" that is biologically active.
I DO NOT recommend Chromium Picolinate because it has not
stood the test of time and has not been proven to be as effective
as the GTF Chromium.
I would recommend that you first consult your physician or other
health or nutritional professional before adding this to your diet.

Key # 8 - Make Sure You've Got Plenty of Healthy FIBER in your Diet to help your body in the ELIMINATION Process
Daily Quote: "I believe that no single factor plays a more significant role in the origin of disease - or in its cure or prevention - than obtaining sufficient dietary FIBER." - Ted Broer
One of the most important keys to good nutrition and tips to eating healthy is getting enough dietary fiber in your foods every day. Your digestive system, especially the colon and large intestine, become constipated when too little water and dietary fiber are consumed. The U.S. Public Health Service has stated that approximately 90% of all Americans have a clogged colon to some degree. It is sad but true that Americans are one of the most constipated people in the whole world. We should be eating at least 25-30 grams of fiber a day, but shockingly, many Americans have a hard time consuming 30 grams of fiber a week!
According to licensed nutritionist and exercise physiologist, Ted Broer, "I am also convinced that no other single health condition plays so great a role in the development of disease as does constipation. Constipation has been shown to have a role in the development of hemorrhoids, heart disease, artherosclerosis, cancer (too many types to mention), diabetes, gall bladder disease, kidney stones and ulcers - just to name a few."
WHAT IS FIBER & WHAT DOES IT DO FOR YOUR BODY?
What is fiber? Simply put, fiber is the part of your food that cannot break down or be digested by your digestive system. Dietary fiber, or "roughage," is found abundantly in living plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, and grains. Fiber comes in two forms - soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber easily dissolves in water, so it can be easily absorbed in the intestine and circulated in the blood stream. Soluble fiber, such as pectin found in most fruits, in the blood can attach itself to blood fats and create a complex that removes these fats from the blood system, which in turn lowers cholesterol.
Insoluble fiber also absorbs water, but it remains in the intestine and forms the majority of the bulk necessary to collect and push bodily wastes through the intestine and out of the body. Food waste and bodily processes more very slowly, if at all, through the colon without the assistance of insoluble fiber. In this unhealthy case, the slow-moving mass can putrefy or rot right in the body causing the body to start poisoning itself. As you can see, insoluble fiber is critical to healthy functioning of the bowels and the whole elimination process.
THREE MAIN CAUSES OF CONSTIPATION
What's causing so much constipation (and all of its related illnesses) in America and the Western world? There are three main causes that need to be addressed and resolved. The first and foremost cause is our unhealthy low-fiber diet. This consists of denatured, bleached, refined, processed foods and flours, as well as a lack of fresh vegetables and fruit. When our wheat flour is refined, they take out over 50 healthy nutrients, and then add 12 synthetic vitamins that are totally indigestible. Then they put it on the supermarket shelves and advertise it as "enriched" wheat flour or bread. The food manufacturers basically throw away the good nutrition and leave Americans with an unhealthy malnutrition processed "food." No wonder almost everyone in America is constipated! And don't forget, most Americans don't even come close to eating the recommended 5-13 servings of vegetables and fruit per day.
The second cause of constipation is not drinking enough water every day. Water is an essential element to the whole digestion, assimilation, and elimination process. Without enough water, food that is digested slows down or comes to a stop. Think of water being like the oil in your car's engine. Without oil, the moving parts would wear each other down and the engine would quickly "freeze" up and break down completely. Likewise, without enough water, your body will become dehydrated and will start to "freeze" up and break down. It won't be able to process food properly or eliminate the waste properly.
The third cause of constipation is a lack of exercise. When your body does not get enough physical activity, food in your intestines and colon starts to slow down. For this reason alone, everyone should go for a 30-60 minute walk every day.
How do you know if you're "regular" enough? The basic guideline to use is this: everyone should have two or three bowel movements a day. This helps all waste matter move quickly through the large intestine and colon. This transit time should ideally be less than eighteen hours, and no more than twenty-four hours.
DO THESE 3 THINGS TO STAY "REGULAR"
1. Drink plenty of natural spring water every day. You should be drinking half your weight in ounces daily. In other words, if you're 160 pounds, you need to drink 80 ounces of water throughout the day.
2. Go for a daily walk to get the regular exercise your body needs.
3. Eat lots of dietary fiber every day and make significant changes to your create a healthy optimum diet. Your body needs at least 25-30 grams of fiber a day. It would also greatly help your system if you eliminated constipation-causing foods such as processed "enriched" wheat flour (white four) and other highly refined, denatured, bleached, processed flour.
GREAT SOURCES OF DIETARY FIBER FOR SUPER HEALTH
1. Fresh, organic vegetables, greens, fruits, and berries - These are all excellent sources of fiber. Aim at eating 75% of your vegetables and greens raw in the form of a healthy vegetable salad every day. Aim at eating 100% of your fruits & berries raw.
2. Beans and legumes. Learn how to soak and cook these yourself, and freeze portions for later use. These are probably the best source of fiber.
3. Brown rice. It has all the fiber and minerals that white rice lacks.
4. 100% whole wheat bread and flour, as well as 100% whole grain breads and flours such as rye, buckwheat, etc. Use these in all of your baking and cooking.
5. Whole grain cereals. These can be hot porridge-type cereals or cold cereal made from 100% whole grains.
6. Eat the skins of potatoes and of other organic fruits & vegetables.
7. Add oat bran, wheat bran, and wheatgerm to your meals.
8. Snack on sun-dried fruit - Enjoy apricots, dates, prunes, raisins, etc., which are all concentrated sources of fiber and nutrients.
9. Instead of drinking fruit juice and vegetable juice, eat the fruit and vegetables themselves so that you get all that healthy dietary fiber.
10. Eat flaxseed and chia seeds. These are a very healthy source of mucilaginous fiber that help relieve constipation and speed up the transit time for elimination.
Here's what Thomas Edison had to say about the future of health.
"The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
And always remember, the secret to losing weight and keeping it off, is to make nutritious and healthy LIFESTYLE CHANGES that become positive healthy habits in your daily routine. Systematic undereating and resisting the temptation to overeat is the first step to change.
